Breakfast at Denny's

Denny's, San Jose (California, USA), October 2019

A steaming mug of coffee on the table,
looking forward to the future
now as alone as before.
Wrapping my mind around the idea
of comforting solitude
as my one and only companion
on this vital journey
far away from dreams past.
A journey to rediscover
my own strength,
my energy, my worth,
a journey, too, to get reacquainted
with my weaknesses,
my limits, my brakes.
On my own, carrying my luggage,
my tools, myself:
I put into practice
what I learned and lived,
what I apprehended. I break
undaunted my limits.
Even though it is hard to go back
to the innocent energy
of starting over,
even though it is hard to go back
to the company of solitude,
I go forth in the light
of a conscience at peace.
Step by step, like at dawn,
the false sensation vanishes
of having lost control,
of being adrift
on a hostile stream.
In my hands rudder and halyards,
I am sailing into a luminous horizon
in the gentle giving wind
which supports my wings,
which takes me beyond
the unsurpassable threshold
of pain, of lost love.
Beyond the threshold
there is a bright future
waiting to shelter me,
a future that I am, step by step,
changing into my present.
Beyond the threshold
of pain perceived
and love lost
lays the harmony
of peace with myself
and with my destiny.
