The Promise

Saarschleife, Mettlach (Saarland, Germany), August 2017

Challenges,
people helping you,
travel companions coming and going,
achievements, learning experiences
which form my being,
which let my world
have a meaning.
And whenever your energy fades,
whenever your drive threatens to decline,
whenever you notice the voids in your life
more than anything else you have done,
don’t let yourself sink in the swamp of despair
and, to keep on going with a smile,
think of the promise you made a long time ago:

Even with wrinkled skin and silver hair,
probably a wise old man,
I will love every single day of my life
the child who lives within myself.
